Seeing Dead Red: 'Geno' to Cincy

The Reds have done it! A power bat is making its way to a ballpark that is one of the best places to hit in Major League Baseball. On February 1st, Cincinnati and homerun specialist Eugenio Suarez agreed to a one-year, $15 million deal. With this addition, an already deep Reds lineup is suddenly rather scary, and the NL Central is shaping up to be quite a fun race between everyone other than the rebuilding St. Louis Cardinals.

Cincinnati Reds Eugenio Suarez

Suarez, 34, is coming off a career year in 2025. He launched 49 home runs while slashing .228/.298/.526 and owning a batting run value of 23, which ranked in the 89th percentile according to Baseball Savant. His unicorn season and near 50-burger were due to his high barrel percentage and him matching his career high of pulled fly balls at 28.6%.

This situation is, to put it mildly, interesting. Most analysts and writers (myself included) have Suarez regressing to the mean in 2026. Some regression is still to be expected after such a prolific power season from an aging veteran, but the addition of Great American Smallpark to the mix changes everything.

The Reds' field ranks fourth in park factor on Baseball Savant, only trailing the Diamondbacks, Red Sox, and Rockies. What this means is that statistically, hitters in Cincinnati have a much better chance of producing than hitters playing in parks with lower park factors. This could be just enough to propel Suarez to another big season before the inevitable decline that’s often parallel with age.

Before the Suarez signing, the Reds had a lot of talent but not much certainty. The pitching remained strong. The offense muddled about with unanswered questions and stalling prospects. Now that a big bat synergizes with a young and dynamic lineup in Cincy, expect major noise.
