On January 16th, 2026, the New York Mets and star shortstop Bo Bichette agreed on a 3-year, $126 million deal. The new star in Queens will be New York’s set-and-forget third baseman playing in an infield that includes the likes of Francisco Lindor, Marcus Semien, and Jorge Polanco. The Mets are building something. Maybe a Phillie killer?

It’s been rumored that owner Steven Cohen and his band of Mets swept in at the last moment to nab Bichette’s services from the division rival Philadelphia Phillies. Yet another chapter in a heated rivalry that seems to be increasingly prevalent.
The newest king in Queens possesses multiple attributes that you look for in a star player. Specifically at the dish, Bichette is a force to be reckoned with. In 582 at-bats in 2025, the shortstop turned third baseman put up an .840 OPS with a .311 batting average while commanding the zone like almost no other. Bichette is a rarity in modern baseball. Not only is his approach toxic to strikeouts (86th percentile K%), but he also maintains being a threat to hit the long ball (.483 SLG%). Bichette has a career OPS+ of 121, and excluding an outlier injury-riddled season in 2024, he has been consistent his entire career.
The biggest question mark that comes with the newest addition to the Mets lineup is how his glove will translate to the hot corner. Bichette ranked very low in terms of his 2025 fielding metrics (-13 OAA, 36th percentile arm strength), so it’s a fair question. The answer to said question is Francisco Lindor. The Mets seem to have faith in the future Hall-of-Fame shortstop to aid Bichette on the left side of the infield and nullify his otherwise tall task at a new position. Lindor is on track to go down as one of the greatest defensive players of all time, and playing beside him should immensely aid Bichette’s positional relocation.
When push comes to shove, the Mets needed a big bat, and they got one. Bichette will now be in a lineup that hosts: Francisco Lindor, Jorge Polanco, Marcus Semien, Juan Soto, and the volatile yet powerful Francisco Alvarez. New York is stockpiling big names and looking to take control of the East come 2026. Expect Bichette to get a warm welcome at the Bank and to thrive in the big moment.
